My Plan of Study
"If you really want to help someone, you'll study the law."
As I've previously mentioned, I am a senior BA Psychology student currently attending the California State University. I am
going to continue my studies at the graduate level. My goal is to design my own social work (MSW) and law program of study utilizing
the University of London LLB. I am a mature student in my late 40's who has many years of experience in the healthcare field
here in the U.S.
While a drug treatment facility is my current place of employment, I previously worked for a prominent corporate
attorney, who while in the course of my 11-year employ, constantly encouraged me to study law. His words to me were: "If you really
really want to help someone, you'll study the law." This wise gentleman would nod at me with a sly smile saying:
"Help your friends; study the law." He recommended the University of London LLB International Programme and believed I
possessed the smarts and discipline to pull it off. Well we shall see.
My intention isn't so much to practice law here in the states or even the UK, but to add knowledge of law to my current field of
knowledge, as well as to have the option, if I should at some point desire to practice as an attorney. So actual practice is not my primary objective for studying law.
I have come across certain joint degree programs here in the states offering both the Masters in Social Work and Juris Doctor (JD). While this would also be a viable option for those such as myself, I personally want to study law from an international perspective. This is but one of the principle reasons why I chose the route I'm currently taking. My plan is to first complete my BA, which at this writing will happen in just a few short months. Then I will begin the process of registering with UoL. For now, I am reading supplementary law texts and journals recommended by University of London.
